Firebird Metals Limited (ASX:FRB) Commences LMFP Battery Production

Operational Achievements

Firebird Metals Limited has initiated testwork for lithium manganese iron phosphate (LMFP) cathode material at its R&D centre in Jinshi, China. Five batches have been completed, with LMFP button batteries already produced from the initial testing phase.

Cost Advantages

The innovative LMFP production process is expected to reduce manganese sulphate operating costs by approximately 32% or US$167 per tonne. This efficiency is achieved by eliminating sulphate crystallisation and packaging steps, resulting in substantial cost savings.

Future Outlook

Firebird plans to complete a total of 100 batches, which will be converted into button batteries for comprehensive evaluation. Following the testwork program, a Scoping Study will be undertaken to assess the potential expansion of the pilot plant to produce around one metric tonne of LMFP daily.

Executive Comments

Managing Director Mr Peter Allen stated, “The commencement of testwork and first production of LMFP batteries with CSU is an exciting and transformative step forward for Firebird in the commercialisation of our LMFP cathode materials, which will ultimately be distributed directly into global battery markets. We expect our process to translate into substantial cost advantages in sulphate production by bypassing the manganese sulphate crystallisation process, which is the largest component of our operating cost. The future for Firebird is very exciting and we look forward to delivering on a busy 2025.”
